March 9, 2013: Institutions Do Optional

“Students Don’t Do Optional” – So say a number of colleagues recently (including Jillian Kinzie at the 2013 Annual Conference on the First-Year Experience http://cpr.iub.edu/uploads/Kinzie_FYE_Keynote2013.pdf). But, data from the LIPSS project suggest that “Institutions Do Optional,” at least when it comes to these five research-supported policies/practices.


February 13, 2013: Information Dissemination to Students

On the whole, institutions are giving their students a lot of information. But look at the way schools share info after classes begin… There’s a real drop off in information sharing after classes begin. Fewer than half of participating schools remind students about “social behavior codes/standards” or “expectations regarding academic efforts” or who to contact regarding academic difficulties after the school year has actually started… the precise time when first-year students are confronting their first bad grades, their first social decisions, and their first bouts of homesickness.


February 2, 2013: Assessment: Lots of Data, Little Action

Although roughly half of participating institutions have recently assessed the effects of students classroom, curricular, and out-of-class experiences, fewer than one in five systematically use assessment data to allocate resources.


January 25, 2013: Coordinating the First Year Experience

More than 2/3 of the 57 pilot institutions have at least some mechanism for institution-wide coordination of the first-year experience. At institutions with such mechanisms, individuals and committees responsible for coordinating the first-year experience typically report to high-level institutional administrators.
